Meet the Pastor

The Rev. Doug Sasser is a native of Georgia. During his earlier years he also lived in North Carolina and Tennessee. While working as a church intern he also spent four summers in Washington State and Florida. His higher education work began at Young Harris College in Towns County, Georgia. Then he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Speech/Communication from the University of Georgia. His Master of Divinity degree is from Candler School of Theology, Emory University. After seminary he worked in guest services and group sales for a United Methodist conference center and then returned to his alma mater, Candler School of Theology, to work in the continuing education office. He entered pastoral ministry in June of 2007 shortly after marrying his wife Deena. Haygood UMC is his fifth pastoral appointment.

  • We currently have three worship opportunities at Haygood UMC.

    The Beacon: Traditional Worship that Shines God’s Light at 9:30am

    This worship service meets in the Sanctuary and lasts about 45 minutes, and music includes congregational song, a choir, piano accompaniment and handbells. Services include scripture, a sermon and prayers of the people as well as other acts of worship. This service is held in our sanctuary, across the lobby from our social hall, and accessed from the east or west parking lots. People typically wear business casual clothing.

    Crossroads: Modern Worship at the Intersection of God and Life at 10:45am

    The Crossroads service meets in the Social Hall and typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour and the music is modern praise music including piano, guitars, bass, and drums. The service includes scripture, a sermon and prayers of the people. The service is casual and held in our social hall, across the lobby from our sanctuary and accessed from the east or west parking lots.. People wear casual to business casual clothing.

    Chapel Service: First and Third Sunday of the month at 8:30am

    Worship on the First and Third Sunday of each month at 8:30 am in our historic Oliver Chapel. This is an informal short service including scripture, a sermon, and prayers of the people as well as two hymns.

  • We have Children’s Church and Nursery available during both the 9:30 am and 10:45 am worship services.

    All of our staff and volunteers are Safe Sanctuaries trained.
