Events at Haygood UMC
Haygood UMC is committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ for transformation of the world. Whether it is an Easter Brunch or a meal donation, we encourage you to join us at one of our many Haygood UMC events. Find information below on each event and contact the church office if you have any questions.
You can also find an overview of our continuous and seasonal events below.
Christmas Cantata
Hello, Haygood!
The Chancel Choir and the Worship Band will lead the Christmas Cantata on December 22nd during One service. This year, we will be sharing He Shall Reign Forevermore, arr. Jay Rouse.
The Chancel Choir will have a Saturday morning rehearsal to peruse the booklet on Saturday, November 2, from 9 AM - 11 AM in the Sanctuary. Then, we rehearse every Thursday from 3:30 PM - 5 PM (extended for the Cantata rehearsal until Dec. 19th). The final rehearsal will be on Saturday, December 21st from 9 AM - 12 PM. I hope many of you will consider joining us! If you have any questions, please contact Joan (music@haygoodumcvb.org)
Winter Shelter
For the past few years, people from Haygood UMC have helped Baylake UMC by preparing meals for them as they host Winter Shelter. This year on December 26, people from Haygood UMC will prepare and serve the dinner meal at Baylake UMC. We could use some help to prepare and serve the meal to 65 people. We will leave from Haygood UMC shortly after 4:00 pm and should finished by 8:30 pm. Any amount of time you could help will be appreciated.
Where: Baylake UMC, 4300 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23455
When: December 26 from 4 pm to 8:30 pm
If you are interested in helping, contact Sharon Jenkins (757-822-3035) or Leslie Lampella (757-615-3548).
Journey To Bethlehem: An Advent Experience
This Advent we are inviting you to experience Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem in a whole new way.
On December 7, 2024 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the social hall a 24 foot canvas labyrinth will be out as a tool to experience Advent..
The Veriditas Labyrinth website describes a labyrinth:
“The labyrinth is a walking meditation, a path of prayer and an archetypal blueprint where psyche meets Spirit. It has only one path that leads from the outer edge in a circuitous way to the center. There are no tricks to it and no dead ends. Unlike a maze where you lose your way, the labyrinth is a spiritual tool that can help you find your way.”
At 1:30 pm we will have a twenty minute introduction to the labyrinth and how to walk it. We will have the devotion based on Luke chapters one and two available to do before as you prepare for your walk. If you have experienced the labyrinth before please feel free to skip the introduction and read the devotion and walk at your own pace. If people wish at 3 pm we will have a small group discussion for those who want to share about their experience on the labyrinth. Rev. Kimberly Barker-Brugman will be our facilitator for the day.
For more information you may contact Pastor Kim B2 at pastorkim@soulstoryministries.org
United Women of Faith - Combined Meeting
The United Woman of Faith Circles will have a combined meeting on November 13 at 2:00 p.m. in the Social Hall. Pastor Doug will lead a discussion of the book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land.
Judeo Christian Outreach Meal
On October 28, members of Haygood United Methodist Church will prepare the last meal for this year for the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center (JCOC) to feed those in need. This meal is the last of four meals the church committed to prepare this year. By the end of October we will have fed a total of 320 individuals. Thanks for all the ways you have supported this ministry. We appreciate your prayers, donations of money and time, and cooking skills.
This year is a time of change for the JCOC programs. The buildings that have housed JCOC activities since 1990, have been torn down so they can expand their outreach to the community. When the construction is completed in 15 months, there will be a 3-story building which will contain 38 studio apartments for single adults experiencing homelessness, a commercial kitchen, dining hall, and administrative offices. During this time the community dinners which Haygood UMC supports, are operating out of a temporary location. In 2026, we hope Haygood UMC can return to supporting JCOC with 4 meals each year.
Lunch For WesleyODU
On October 22, members from Haygood UMC will provide lunch for 40 students at WesleyODU. This is another opportunity the church has to provide meals to those facing food insecurity. It is also an opportunity to connect with students at ODU.
The Rev Josh McCauley, who attends Haygood UMC, is the Director of Wesley ODU. Last year he began the ministry of serving free lunches on Tuesday to the WesleyODU students. Last November Haygood UMC provided lunch to about 20 students. This ministry has doubled in a year. WesleyODU is growing!
Haygood UMC will provide lunch once again in the Spring Semester. Let Leslie Lampella (LLampella@msn.com) or Sharon Jenkins (bpjmom@aol.com) know if you have an interest in participating in this ministry.
Preschool Prayer Partners
This academic year will be pair up preschool students with members of Haygood who will pray for them and their families. The families have filled out permission forms if they want to participate in this.
Sunday September, 15 volunteers will sign up church members before and after both worship services.
Thanks to Tammy Estep and Sharon Jenkins for helping sign up volunteers to pray. You will be given a card with a student’s photo, birthday and home address. Send your child a card (birthdays and holidays) to let them know you are praying for them and their families. If you want to go the extra mile include some stickers or a gift card on special occasions. Please keep gift card amounts to under $25.00 for the year. This is a way we can strengthen the bond between the preschool and the church. Speak with Pastor Doug if you have any questions.
Judeo-Christian Outreach Meal
On Saturday, August 3, Haygood United Methodist Church is providing the daily meal for the Judeo-Christain Outreach Center (JCOC). JCOC provides a free meal each day for those in need in Virginia Beach.
The members of Haygood Women United in Faith will gather on that Saturday morning to prepare the meals. Then they will deliver the meals in time for distribution at 2:30 pm. We will also deliver "snack bags" to provide additional food to the participants that day. Freya Becker has decorated the bags. She will be joined by her sister, Annabelle Becker, and grandmother, Wendy Peck as they fill the bags on August 3.
Members of Haygood UMC have often answered the call to be the hands and feet of Christ to feed the hungry. The next meal scheduled for the JCOC is on Monday, October 28. Let Sharon Jenkins (757-822-3035) or Leslie Lampella (757-615-3548) know if you would like to help in October.
